Five men suspected of car hijacking were arrested at Ngcobo on Saturday, Eastern Cape police said.
It was alleged that a 41-year-old man was driving in his Isuzu double cab bakkie at about 3.30am on Saturday from his home at Ngcingwana village, Dutywa, to Dutywa town, Captain Jackson Manatha said.
The man saw five other men hiking and gave them lift. When they were near the Dutywa Health Centre, about 5km from Dutywa town, the men allegedly drew firearms and demanded the vehicle keys.
“He gave them the keys in fear of his life. The suspects drove around the Dutywa town and later dumped him without injuring him. He reported the car hijacking at Dutywa police station.”
The bakkie was found at Ngcobo with all five men on Saturday. The men were detained at the Ngcobo police station for possession of a vehicle suspected to be stolen.
They would be charged with car hijacking and were expected to appear in the Dutywa Magistrate’s Court soon,” Manatha said.
Butterworth policing cluster commander Brigadier Stanley Sibhidla warned motorists not to give lifts to strangers, especially at night.
