Five people were killed in two separate accidents reported by the Eastern Cape Transport Department this weekend.
Spokesperson, Unathi Binqose, said 14 other people sustained injuries in the accidents on Saturday night.
He said the "worst" of the crashes occurred at about 17H30 on the N2 road in Mthatha near Sibangweni towards Qumbu, where two vehicles collided head-on.
"A Honda Ballade with five occupants (4 males and 1 female) travelling towards Mthatha collided with a minibus taxi with 12 occupants coming out of Mthatha towards Qumbu," he said.
Three males from the Honda, including the driver, died on the scene, while two passengers and 12 others from the mini-bus were rushed to a hospital in Mthatha with various injuries.
Meanwhile, he said a man and a boy were killed when a vehicle overturned in Gqeberha early in the evening.
He said the accident happened on the road between Gqeberha and Addo.
Cases of culpable homicide have been opened by police for investigation.
