The Eastern Cape Transport Department said five people died and 13 others were injured when a mini-bus taxi overturned on a gravel road in Libode.
Spokesperson, Unathi Binqose, said the accident happened late Thursday afternoon as the vehicle was heading from Mthatha to Majola locations.
He said the driver of the fully loaded Toyota Quantum reportedly lost control of the vehicle which then overturned.
“Four passengers, an adult male, and a female, believed to be husband and wife as well as 2 children the youngest of whom was two months old died on the scene, while an elderly woman in her 70s later succumbed to her injuries on arrival at St Barnabas Hospital in Ntlaza,” Binqose said.
He added that three other passengers sustained severe injuries, while nine others including the diver escaped with minor injuries.
A case of culpable homicide has been opened at Libode Saps for further investigations.
