The NSRI has confirmed that at least 5 people had drowned along the South African coast on Christmas Day.
National spokesperson, Craig Lambinon says an eight-year-old girl drowned while swimming in the Great Brak River on Tuesday morning.
He says an unconscious man from Malawi was pulled out of the water at Buffelsbaai near Knysna by two surfers, but despite attempts to resuscitate him, he was declared dead at the scene.
At Wilderness, a man from the Netherlands drowned after he was caught up in a strong rip current with two other people.
A man drowned in Strand near Cape Town, after disappearing under the waves, and at Kleinmond, the body of a 28-year-old man was found on Tuesday evening, after he and friends jumped off a bridge into the Palmiet River earlier in the day, and went missing.
