Five people died after their shack burned down in the Walmer Township in Port Elizabeth on Saturday night.
Police Spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu says the family returned from a traditional ceremony when soon after a fire was seen burning in the kitchen area.
Neighbours tried to douse the fire but the intensity of the flames engulfed the entire shack.
The victims included the 57-year-old owner of the house, his 39-year old wife, a 27-year old family member and the couple's two daughters aged 3 and 10.
Their names cannot be released at this stage until their identities are confirmed.
Police have opened an inquest docket.
