Eastern Cape police said five people were killed in a shooting incident near Mthatha in the Eastern Cape on Wednesday night.
Police spokesperson, Brigadier Tembinkosi Kinana, said the violence began at around 6 pm when two men were shot dead by five assailants near the KwaDosi Locality near the city.
He said after police were alerted they began searching for the shooters in the area of the Mpheko River, where officers came under fire.
Kinana said in the subsequent shoot-out three suspects were fatally wounded, while two others got away.
No SAPS officers were injured.
Kinana said police recovered five firearms and ammunition at the scene.
