A 31-year-old man was killed and his cousin severely injured in a mob justice incident, after the deceased's sister complained to the community that her Sassa card had been stolen.
Five people were arrested in connection with the tragic incident which occurred last Saturday in Zwide in Gqeberha.
Police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, said the alleged perpetrators were due to appear in court on Friday on charges of murder and attempted murder.
She said it is alleged that the sister of one of the deceased called on the community to intervene after realising that her Sassa card and book were missing.
Naidu said about 30 community members arrived at the woman's house and took the two men to a nearby park where they were assaulted with sjamboks, sticks, and water pipes.
She said the body of Lwano Kana was found the following morning at his house, while his 42-year-old cousin was taken to hospital after sustaining serious injuries.
Nelson Mandela Bay District Commissioner Major General Vuyisile Ncata has once again strongly condemned these kinds of senseless acts of violence.
He has pleaded with the community to not take their law into their own hands.
