Five suspects have been arrested following the murder of a 12-year old girl in gang violence in Port Elizabeth's Northern Areas, and the subsequent mob-justice killing of a 25-year-old man which also left a 16-year-old teenager critically injured.
The arrests on Sunday afternoon came less than 24 hours after 12-year-old Alvineesha Brooks was caught in the cross-fire of a gang-shooting in Buys Street, Bloemendal, on Saturday night, involving members of the Carlitos and Hondekoppe Gangs.
Enraged community members then mobilised and marched on a suspected gang member's house in Bardien Street where the 25-year-old Tavern Moss was stabbed and beaten to death.
A 16-year-old was critically injured in the same attack.
Colonel Priscilla Naidu says members of the Provincial Organised Crime Investigation Unit arrested a 21-year-old suspect affiliated to the NTB gang in Bardien Street for the murder of Alvineesha Brookes.
Four other suspects aged 18, 21, 22 and 49 were arrested in Buys Street for the murder of Moss, the attempted murder of the 16-year-old and three cases of malicious damage to property.
They're all expected to appear in court soon.
