Five members of a family, believed to be from the Western Cape, have perished in an accident on the notorious R-61 in the Eastern Cape.
Provincial traffic authorities did not release their names, but confirmed that their Toyota Corolla, had been registered in the Western Cape.
Spokesperson, Charles Bramwell, says the accident happened on Thursday morning between Cradock and Tarkastad.
He told Algoa FM News that the driver of the car lost control of the vehicle in a curve in the road.
"On the scene we had three fatalities, two girls aged between 10 and 11 and a 21 year old man. On the way to the hospital a female patient in her fourties,who was seriously injured, died on her way to the hospital. The driver of the car is also in hospital with serious injuries. A five year old child who was also in the car died in the hospital" he said
