Five children, aged between four and 11, were among six people who died in a fire that engulfed a shack in an informal settlement in Gqeberha.
Police spokesperson, Captain Andre' Beetge, said their 68-year-old grandmother also perished in the blaze in the Chris Hani area in New Brighton during the early hours of Thursday morning.
He said New Brighton SAPS was alerted at about 04:00, and upon arrival on the scene found that the structure was completely destroyed.
Beetge said the bodies of the children and the woman were found after fire-fighters extinguished the fire.
He said the formal identification will need to be conducted by "forensic analysis".
The cause of the fire is still under investigation and an inquest docket has been opened.
