Five arrested for armed robbery, perjury and theft


Police in Dutywa arrested four people who allegedly stole R700,000 worth of cigarettes from a truck.

Police spokesperson captain Jackson Manatha says the truck driver and his companion claimed to have been robbed by 4 men while transporting the cargo from East London to Mthatha.

He says investigators became suspicious about their story which turned out to be a lie.

Manatha says they eventually led police to Payne Village in Mthatha where the stolen cigarettes were found.

The four will appear in court on Wenesday on charges of armed robbery.

Police are still searching for two more suspects.

Meanwhile Dutywa police have arrested a 47 year old man on charges of perjury and theft.

This, after he allegedly lied to police about being robbed of a substantial amount of cash which he withdrew from a lcoal bank last week.

Manatha says they became suspicious and after lengthy questioning he allegedly confessed to stealing the money.

He will appear in court on Wednesday.
