First shipment of wind turbines arrive at Ngqura

The first bulk delivery of wind turbines for the Eastern Cape's wind farm projects arrives at the Port of Ngqura on Friday morning.

The National Ports Authority says an estimated 213 complete wind turbines will be shipped through the Port of Ngqura in three phases this year.

Today's shipment is destined for the Cookhouse Wind Energy Facility, one of several wind farm projects under construction in the province.

Ngqura port manager, Mpumi Dweba, says the vessel, Althea, will be docking with its cargo from India.

"It's going to be a historic event for us as the Port of Ngqura, and I think going forward we actually want to position the Port of Ngqura to be a Port that will be able to handle the abnormal commodities which we call "project cargo" Dweba said.
