First half of 2018 driest for NMB since 1970

The first six months of 2018 was the driest for Nelson Mandela Bay since 1970.

That's according to the PE Branch of the SA Weather Service, which said on Thursday that "while the south coast experienced one of the driest first six months of the year on record, the northeastern interior of the Eastern Cape recorded some record highs.

Weather Office spokesperson, Garth Sampson, said that "seasonal outlook until late Spring (November) does not look promising, especially for the southern coastal regions".

"Although July to September shows a promise of above normal rainfall along the coast and over the interior, west of Port Alfred, this situation rapidly deteriorates.  August to October and September to November shows a high degree of confidence in below average rainfall along the south coast and into the Langkloof (the NMBMM catchment area) right through to the Mossel Bay area," said Sampson.

"The coastal belt around East London up to Port St Johns shows a similar below average trend for the period August to October.  Over the short term, there is no promise of any significant rainfall," he added.
