An investigation is underway into the cause of a fire that gutted eight shops in Peddie in the Eastern Cape.
Police spokesperson, Captain Khaya Tonjeni, said police were conducting patrols in the town in the early hours of Tuesday morning when they noticed smoke coming from a shop owned by a foreign national.
He said the fire spread rapidly causing damage to a total of eight shops, which included a supermarket, salon and six shops, three of them hardware shops and also owned by foreign nationals.
“The cause of the fire is still to be determined,” Tonjeni said.
