Fire-fighters save "important buildings" at Woodridge - NMB Municipality

Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Fire and Emergency said its fire-fighters were able to save some of the “important buildings” at Woodridge College.

In a statement on Sunday the NMB Municipality said “school management would be better-placed” to provide more details.

Earlier, the Metro said that “50%” of the school had been destroyed.

Meanwhile, by mid-day Sunday Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality said that the fires at Van Staden’s Gorge and Rocklands areas were being extinguished and “damping down” had already started.

Municipality spokesperson, Mthubanzi Mniki, said fire and emergency teams on site were hoping that the weather would not change.

He said the Municipality also thanked everyone who assisted in any way during this difficult time.

“It was not easy, but with the help from the Nelson Mandela Bay community, both public and private business, the raging fires were defeated,” he said.

Police also confirmed that a 72-year-old woman died at her farm in the Thornhill area.

Captain Gerda Swart said her 73-year-old husband was admitted to hospital in Port Elizabeth with burn wounds and died during Saturday night.
