Fire causes extensive damage to Grahamstown High School

A veld fire which was fanned by strong winds has caused extensive damage to a Grahamstown's PJ Olivier High School.

Damage is expected to be in excess of R1m.

The school's deputy headmaster, Marnie Cronje, says one of the teachers noticed a veld fire shortly after 1pm and within minutes the fire had spread to the school.

He says there's been massive damage to the school with the new R600 000 computer centre, which was commissioned last year, completely destroyed.

Cronje says the roof of the computer centre also collapsed.

He says the home of the principal which is on the school grounds was also extensively damaged.

"There has been a lot of water and smoke damage to the school. The computer centre that was destroyed represented a big wing of the school and there were also six classrooms that were totally destroyed," he said.

Cronje says its likely that the school will remain closed for the rest of the week.
