Police have announced the arrest of 15 more people as part of the ongoing investigation into cases of murder and attempted murder at Fort Hare University.
National police spokesperson, Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, said that the arrests were made by the national task team assigned to investigate these incidents.
“This brings the number of those arrested in this case to 25 suspects,” she said.
Mathe said the additional suspects were arrested in various provinces over the Easter weekend including, Gauteng, Eastern and Western Cape as well as KwaZulu-Natal.
She said they face charges ranging from fraud, corruption, kidnapping, murder, and attempted murder.
The arrests relate to the ongoing investigation into the murder of Fort Hare University fleet manager, Petrus Roets, and, Mboneli Vesele, the bodyguard of Vice Chancellor, Professor Sakhela Buhlungu.
Mathe said the new suspects are expected to make their first court appearance on Tuesday, at the Dimbaza Magistrate’s Court in the Eastern Cape.
The National Commissioner of the SAPS, General Fannie Masemola says the task team will continue to do their work without fear or favour.
“The team has been hard at work in getting to the bottom of who is behind fraud, corruption, and the murders at the university,” he said.
