Nelson Mandela University (NMU) is mourning the loss of a female student who was stabbed to death on their George campus on Tuesday, allegedly by a male student.
It is believed that the 20-year-old victim was attacked inside her bedroom at an on-campus residence.
Police spokesperson, Sergeant Christopher Spies, said preliminary reports indicate that police were dispatched to the campus following reports of a violent incident.
"On arrival, the members found the victim inside an ambulance with multiple stab wounds to the body.
"She was declared dead by paramedics on scene."
A 22-year-old man was arrested on the scene and is facing a charge of murder.
The University, in particular the George Campus, extended its condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.
According to a statement from the university, counselling, pastoral, and other psychosocial support mechanisms have been arranged for students and staff affected by the tragedy.
They have appealed for calm and sensitivity while the police investigation runs its course.
The motive for the killing is still unknown and the name of the victim was not released to the media.
