A female police Sergeant from Makhanda is in hospital following a brutal attack at the hands of her former boyfriend.
Police spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu says the 43-year-old officer was on her way to work on Sunday morning when her ex-boyfriend ambushed her on the stairs outside her living quarters.
She says the woman was attacked with a hammer and sustained several wounds on her head and hands.
Colonel Naidu says when she tried to get back into the room the suspect managed to grab her firearm and fired a shot at her.
It was only later established at the hospital that she had not been shot.
The suspect was later found dead in Orgley Street after shooting himself.
Police opened an inquest docket.
Police in Port St Johns are also investigating the murder of an off-duty police officer on Friday.
Colonel Naidu says 39-year-old Sergeant Vuyolethu Madala was visiting a local tavern in Tombo.
She says as when he left, he was followed by two unknown men who fired several shots at him from behind.
The suspects fled in a white bakkie with no number plates.
The motive for the murder is unknown at this stage.
