One person was killed and 17 others injured when a minibus taxi collided head-on with a Toyota Avanza on the R61 near Lusikisiki on Wednesday.
The Provincial Transport Department said the minibus taxi carrying 14 occupants, a complete violation of the COVID-19 passenger regulations, was travelling towards the town when it collided with a vehicle carrying four occupants on Wednesday morning.
The Department's spokesperson, Unathi Bhinqose said a woman who was a passenger in the Avanza died on the scene, while all 14 from the taxi escaped with injuries.
A case of culpable homicide was opened.
Bhinqose said the minibus taxi driver will also have to answer to a charge of violating COVID-19 travel regulations.
