Father and infant only survivors of deadly crash on N10

Four people have died in a car accident on the N10 between Cradock and Middleburg on Thursday morning.

Eastern Cape Transport Department spokesperson, Unathi Bhinqose says all six occupants of the vehicle are suspected to be members of the same family.

He says the driver lost control and overturned the vehicle instantly killing a mother and two kids.

Bhinqose says another passenger, a 19-year-old, died on arrival at the hospital.

He says only a father and his 3-month-old baby survived.

Meanwhile, despite the accident, Bhinqose says the launch of the 2019 Festive Season Arrive Alive Campaign at Engcobo today is off to a good start.

The programme which is expected to set the tone for what is to come this Festive Season was launched by Provincial Transport Department MEC, Weziwe Tikana-Gxothiwe in the company of Premier, Lubabalo Mabuyane on Thursday morning.

The Department has set its programme in motion on the R61 which links the Eastern Cape with the Western Cape, a stretch identified by the Road Traffic Management Corporation as one of the most dangerous roads in the country.

Bhinqose says they have already made several arrests and have taken unroadworthy vehicles off the road.
