Fallen PE businessman spends first night behind bars

Former high-flying Port Elizabeth businessman Gervan Lubbe has spent his first night in a prison cell as a convicted fraudster.
Lubbe was sentenced yesterday to 43 years behind bars on a variety of charges in the Port Elizabeth Commercial Crimes Court.
Some of the sentences will run concurrently, which means that he will have to serve an effective 20 years.

Lubbe swindled more than R20m from people who invested in his business, "Gervan's Trading", after falsely convincing them of a number of grandiose ventures, which never materialised.

Magistrate Leon Claassen reportedly said during sentencing that Lubbe never showed any remorse, except for the fact that he had been caught out.
