A man has been arrested at Uniondale for possession of contraband cigarettes with a street value of half a million rand.
Police captain Bernadine Steyn says SAPS members based in Oudtshoorn stopped a silver Isuzu bakkie with one occupant at a roadblock about 25 kilometres outside Uniondale on Thursday afternoon.
The vehicle (travelling from Queenstown to George) was searched, during which 60 boxes of illegal cigarettes were found and confiscated.
Steyn says a 31-year-old man was arrested and while being transported to Uniondale police station, he attempted to bribe a police offer.
The suspect is an Ethiopian citizen residing in Queenstown and will appear in court soon.
