Extensive Red Tide in Algoa Bay

An extensive red tide has made its appearance in Algoa Bay.

Tommy Bornmann, who is a plankton scientist at SAEON - the SA Environmental Observation Network -  based at the Ocean Sciences Campus of NMMU, says he observed the Red Tide as he flew into Port Elizabeth from Durban this afternoon.

Bornmann told AlgoaFM New that the Red Tide is not far off shore and stretches from Bird Island all the way around Cape Recife towards Seaview.

He says they have 8 sampling stations in Algoa Bay and that teams are currently collecting data to determine whether or not the current Red Tide is toxic.

Bornmann says they will have the results of the tests available early tomorrow.
