The Independent Examinations Board (IEB) on Tuesday released results showing that last year's national senior certificate candidates from private schools achieved a 98.82 percent pass rate, slightly down from 98.92 percent in 2018.
The IEB is a South African independent assessment agency which offers examinations for various client schools, mostly private schools.
Some 89.51 percent of these students who wrote the matric exams qualified for entry to study for a bachelor's degree, while 7.91 percent qualified for a diploma and 1.4 percent to study for a higher certificate.
11,818 students were full-time pupils while 779 were part-time learners.
Sixteen schools in the Eastern Cape, comprising 668 learners, sat for the 2019 IEB matric exams.
St Andrew's College and Diocesan School for Girls in Makhanda both achieved 100% pass rates.
Woodridge College, West of Port Elizabeth, also achieved a 100% pass rate.
Of the 71 pupils who wrote the examinations, 70 of them achieved a Bachelors Degree pass.
Merrifield College in East London also achieved a 100% matric pass rate.
"Umalusi has monitored all aspects of the 2019 examination process and has declared the results to be fair and valid," Oberholzer said, referring to South Africa's Council for quality assurance in education and training.
Basic education minister Angie Motshekga is expected to announce the national pass rate incorporating all schools later on Tuesday and the department will then release all results on Wednesday.
