Ex-wife of Gqeberha doctor denied bail in murder plot

The Gqeberha woman who allegedly masterminded her ex-husband's murder was denied bail in the New Brighton Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.

Ethel Noqekwa allegedly hired hitmen to murder the late Zwide doctor, Bantu Noqekwa.

He was shot execution-style at his surgery in May.

In his judgment, Magistrate Mphuthumi Mpofu said Ethel is considered a flight risk.

He also said there was a chance that she could influence state witnesses.

No exceptional circumstances exist which permit her release on bail, Mpofu added.

Ethel and her three co-accused, Siyabulela Gcayiya, Andile Jongi, and Athule Mtyobile have all been charged with the doctor's murder.

Gcayiya and Jongi have abandoned their bids for bail.

Another accused, who is currently in custody at the St. Albans prison on an unrelated charge, will also be added to the list of accused.

The case was remanded to 17 August.
