The Gqeberha man who allegedly murdered his ex-wife and then disposed of her body appeared briefly in the Magistrates Court on Monday.
Johnny Baartman, 59, allegedly killed Desiree Baartman and then dumped her body down a 3.7-meter stormwater drain next to Standford Road near the Jagtersvlakte area.
Baartman also faces a further charge of defeating the ends of justice for allegedly cleaning the crime scene to rid it of evidence.
State prosecutor Melani Hammett informed the court that Baartman would be examined by a district surgeon on Monday.
He was referred to a district surgeon for observation due to displaying suicidal tendencies.
On a previous occasion, the court heard that Baartman attempted to commit suicide by slashing both of his wrists.
According to Hammett, the district surgeon's report is expected to be ready when Baartman appears in court again on Tuesday.
