Event to remember activists who disappeared during apartheid

Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University and Amnesty International will host an event on Thursday to remember those politicical activists who disappeared during the apartheid era.

NMMU says the families of civic leaders, Sipho Hashe, Qaqawuli Godolozi and Champion Galela will join the commemoration at the Missionvale campus.

The event seeks to link the history of the country and city with Amnesty International's International Day of the Disappeared.

Several apartheid era security policemen were denied for amnesty by the Truth Commision for the abduction and murder of the men, known as the Pebco Three.

The only senior security policeman to be granted amnesty for conspiring and ordering the abduction and murder of the Pebco 3, was former Head of Security Police in Port Elizabeth, Harold Snyman who has since died.
