A man who escaped from the North End prison in Gqeberha on Sunday is back behind bars.
The Department of Correctional Services says Andries Venter was re-arrested on Thursday afternoon in Summerstrand by police officials in collaboration with the Department of Correctional Services Tracking team.
Department spokesperson, Nobuntu Gantana, says this followed a tip-off from a SAPS informant.
Venter was jailed in June for a theft committed in Port Alfred and was serving a two-year sentence.
He was rearrested at the corner of Kings Road in Summerstrand.
His place of hiding out during his period of escape was Kings Beach and surrounding areas.
There were no injuries or fatalities during the execution of the re-arrest process.
The offender has been charged with escape from lawful custody and will appear in court soon.
