Eastern Province Cricket and Westering High School are mourning the loss of Richard Dolley, one of Nelson Mandela Bay’s most popular educators and cricket administrators.
Dolley passed away from Covid-19 complications late on Wednesday night.
He was much-loved at Westering High School where he was having a hugely positive impact on the school’s cricketing and hockey fortunes.
“It is with very heavy hearts that we share the sad news of Mr Richard Dolley’s passing,” the school wrote on its Facebook page. “Our senior Deputy Principal will be sorely missed at Westering High School and we offer our sincere condolences to the Dolley family.”
In his playing days, Dolley was a right-hand batsman and medium-fast bowler during a career that included 36 first-class matches between 1982 and 1991, and in which he scored over 1 100 runs and took 100 wickets.
“It is an extremely sad day for us. He was a real gentleman and a giant in cricket and hockey circles,” said Shafiek Abrahams, acting CEO of Eastern Province Cricket. “My condolences and that of the whole Eastern Cape cricket fraternity go out to his wife Bernie and sons Corbyn and Brad, and the rest of the Dolley family.”
Former EP Cricket President and current Cricket South Africa Vice President Donovan May said Dolley was a valuable member of the EP Cricket board and was not afraid to speak out about the sport he had so much passion for.
“He was a firm believer in non-racial sport and his wisdom and passion for the game will be sorely missed,” said May. “Richard’s passing is a loss to sport in the province as a whole as he was very active in the school system in cricket and hockey in particular.”
At the time of his passing Richard Dolley was an active Director of Eastern Province Cricket and was Chairman of the Cricket Committee and an executive member of Eastern Province Schools cricket.
