The Eastern Cape MEC for safety Weziwe Tikana-Gxothiwe has warned motorists and drivers of public transport in particular, against the excessive use and heavy reliance on so-called energy Drinks.
She urged people to be well-rested before embarking on a long trip and to take regular breaks.
Tikana-Gxothiwe says cans of energy drinks have been a constant feature in almost all the accident scenes that traffic officials attended to.
Authorities will intensify their focus on the troublesome R61 as well as on the N2, N6, and N10.
Ten people have already lost their lives on the N10 between Middelburg and Cradock this festive season.
Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula will brief the media on Monday to give a first update on the festive season death toll.
