A funeral home data capturer has appeared in court for fraud after she allegedly submitted a funeral policy claim on behalf of a deceased person and pocketed the money.
The 33-year-old Tumeka Zweni from Bathurst appeared before the Port Alfred Magistrates' Court this week and was released on R1000 bail.
A relative of the deceased reported the matter to the police when the accused received a policy payout of R10 000.
Police spokesperson, Captain Mali Govender said Zweni allegedly submitted funeral claims against deceased persons and in one incident, informed unsuspecting family members that the claim would not be paid out citing various reasons.
She said the victim went to the funeral home where she took a policy for a relative who had just passed on, to submit a claim.
Zweni then informed her that she could not receive her payment as the policy had not matured.
The victim handed over the death certificate after she was requested to do so for cancellation of the policy.
Captain Govender said Zweni allegedly used the relative's bank card to withdraw the money.
The witness also revealed that there were several other claims paid into her account.
The suspect is expected back in court on the 27th of August.
