Police in Cathcart are investigating a murder after the body of an elderly woman was found in a pool of blood in her home in the early hours of Friday morning.
Spokesperson Captain Namhla Mdleleni says neighbours noticed that the door of the victim’s house was damaged and saw suspects running away from the scene.
Upon arriving at the scene police found the lifeless body of a woman.
Mdleleni says SAPS immediately activated a team who managed to identify one of the suspects.
During the attempt to arrest him shots were exchanged and the suspect sustained a shot to his upper body.
Mdleleni says he later succumbed to his injuries
Police are still searching for a second suspect.
Saps did not release the name of the victim although it is believed that she was a well-known nurse in town.
