A 61-year-old man from Sedgefield on the Garden Route has been arrested for the murder of his wife.
Police spokesperson, captain Bernadine Steyn, says the man was arrested on Tuesday on charges of murder, attempted murder and arson.
The incident happened in the early hours of Monday morning when the suspect allegedly locked his wife Hester Salmans and a 14 year old girl inside their house in the seaside town.
"On Monday morning at approximately 00:15 the suspect locked his 65 year old wife and a 14 year old girl inside their house in Sedgefield. The suspect allegedly set the house alight and fled the scene," said Steyn.
"The 14 year old girl managed to escape through the burglar bars at one of the windows and fled to the neighbour's house for assistance. When the neighbours arrived on the scene the house was already burned to the ground."
She says the body of his wife, Hester Salmans, was found inside the house.
Steyn says the "suspect was found by a member of the public in Kingfisher Street, Sedgefield" early on Tuesday morning and taken to the Police station where he was arrested.
He will appear in the Knysna Magistrates' court on Thursday.
