Elderly amputee dies in PE fire

A 73-year-old man has died after a fire gutted parts of a frail care centre in Morningside, Port Elizabeth.

Police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, said the fire was detected at around 8am on Friday in an upper level of Executive Frail Care in Colin Street.

She said an employee, who noticed that the man had not come down for breakfast, had taken his food to him when she noticed smoke coming from the top level of the facility.

Naidu said she raised the alarm and all the residents were hurriedly evacuated.

"All the people were removed except the man that was still up in his room.  The fire had spread and he had passed on," said Naidu.

His name has not yet been released.

Naidu said the surviving residents have been taken to another frail care centre in the vicinity.
