Springboks

Chaotic scenes at the East London segment of the Springboks trophy tour have claimed the life of a 20-year-old Fort Hare University student.

Minentle Noqhamka was allegedly hit by a police vehicle during the festivities in the Buffalo City Metro earlier this month.

According to a statement from the office of the Eastern Cape premier Oscar Mabuyane, she passed away on Tuesday.

According to the statement, she was admitted to Frere Hospital in East London, with a leg injury but later had to be amputated.

Mabuyane on Wednesday expressed condolences to her family and friends.

"We wish the family feelings of comfort, moments of peace, and memories of joy during this difficult time,' he said.

SA Rugby president, Mark Alexander says the union is deeply saddened by the tragic accident

"We extend our heartfelt condolences to the Noqhamka family and friends after her life was so abruptly cut short by this terrible accident. The trophy tour celebration was to share the joy of success and victory to have it end in sorrow for this family is awful. We share the family's grief", he said.
