The Eastern Cape Liquor Board (ECLB) has revoked the license of a tavern owner in Scenery Park with immediate effect.
Spokesperson Pumlani Fani says criminal charges will also be laid against the license holder for the blatant contravention of the Eastern Cape Liquor Act which stipulates that no alcohol shall be sold to persons under the age of 18.
The East London tavern tragedy has made international headlines after 21 people, mostly teenagers, died in the early hours of Sunday morning.
Police spokesperson Brigadier Thembinkosi Kinana would not speculate on the cause of death and says post mortems will be conducted.
The victims were celebrating the end of exams when it is alleged that someone sprayed pepper spray or some sort of gas resulting in chaos.
The victims had no visible injuries and graphic photographs doing the rounds on social media show the children lying on the floor as if they are sleeping.
The ECLB has launched a toll-free number for community members to tip them off to liquor outlets that don't comply with the law.
The number is 080 000 0420 or you can WhatsApp 076 403 6223.
Meanwhile, President Cyril Ramaphosa has also expressed his condolences and concern about the death of the teenagers.
He says he is also concerned about the reported circumstances under which the teenagers were gathered at a venue which, on the face of it, should be off-limits to under 18's.
The President says he expects the law to take its course following investigations into the tragedy.
Ramaphosa says the incident was even worse as it happened during Youth Month.
SAPS management has ordered the deployment of maximum resources in this investigation.
The party at the Enyobeni tavern was advertised for weeks and the poster clearly stated that no under 18's would be allowed.
