UPDATE: Eastern Cape police have rearrested the 35-year-old man who escaped from police custody on Sunday.
Mawethu Dingela was found in a shack in Ncera Village, near Kidds Beach.
He used an excuse to use the bathroom as an opportunity to escape from lawful custody.
Spokesperson Brigadier Tembinkosi Kinana says Dingela was in custody at the Kidds Beach police station following his arrest for housebreaking and theft and for failing to appear in court.
Brigadier Kinana says Dingela was escorted to use the private bathroom, before being transported to police cells in East London.
The circumstances surrounding his escape are currently under investigation.
