East London High Court Judge Thami Bheshe has sentenced convicted murderer Alutha Pasile to an effective 25 years in prison.
The 25-year-old killed and dismembered Fort Hare University law student Nosicelo Mtebeni in August this year and stuffed parts of her body in a suitcase in a crime that shocked the nation.
In sentencing Pasile on Thursday, Judge Thami Bheshe reportedly described the murder as something out of a horror movie.
She ruled that Pasile killed Mtebeni in cold blood and did not display genuine remorse.
He had earlier pleaded guilty to the gruesome murder after accusing his 23-year-old girlfriend of having an affair.
In his plea statement, Pasile said Mtebeni was “obsessed” with her phone and had changed her password which made him suspicious.
They argued and he grabbed a knife and stabbed her.
During court proceedings earlier this week, the Chief Medical Officer at the EL mortuary, Dr Solomon Zondi, testified that Mtebeni had been dismembered in seven places on her body and had also sustained multiple stab wounds.
Pasile said after the murder he searched for information online on how to dispose of a body.
The Director of Public Prosecutions, Barry Madolo, has welcomed the prison term which was imposed today by the East London High Court on Alutha Pasile.
The National Prosecuting Authority said he was sentenced to 25 years imprisonment for murder and 10 years imprisonment for attempting to defeat the course of justice.
"The sentences were ordered to run concurrently, meaning that Pasile will serve 25 years direct imprisonment."
