The Noncedo Public School in Thornpark near Gonubie was set alight on Tuesday - allegedly by pupils who claimed their teachers did not have their interests at heart.
East London police spokesperson, warrant officer Hazel Mqala, confirmed the incident and said that no arrests had been made.
She could also not confirm allegations that a number of teachers were held hostage by irate pupils.
The Eastern Cape Education Department has condemned the burning of the school while the Democratic Alliance says it will visit the school on Wednesday.
