EL rugby fans throng the streets to welcome Boks

@Springboks

Thousands of fans flooded the streets of East London on Sunday as the World Cup winning Springboks wound up their four-day trophy tour in the Eastern Cape.

The team arrived in Buffalo City on Saturday night, a week after lifting the Webb Ellis trophy for the fourth time at the Stade de France following their one-point victory over New Zealand.

Lukhanyo Am, who hails from the Eastern Cape said it was very “special” to feel the love of the people.

“We know what it means for the people and just seeing it was very good,” he said.

Am, who joined the team following an injury, said getting fit was important, even for the United Rugby Championships for the Sharks.

He said playing for Border was one of the best times of his rugby career and being back in the streets of East London with the Springboks was really great.

Speaking ahead of the trophy tour, scrumhalf, Jayden Hendricks, said he was excited to be in the Eastern Cape and to meet the people in the streets.

Originally from Breidbach outside eQonce (KWT), Hendricks said it was great to be back home, adding that the trophy tour to the other big centres was “unreal” being the first time for him.

In a message for the youth, Hendricks said they must work hard to follow their dreams, adding that four years ago he was in Durban watching the Springboks lift the trophy in Japan and now he was with the team four years later.

“Like I said dream, but you must work hard. There’s a lot of hours you have to put in to become a Springbok,” he said.
