An East London policeman has been killed and two others injured in a freak accident, when a trailer filled with wood, came loose from a bakkie and smashed into a police vehicle.
Police spokesperson, Captain Stephen Marais, says three other cars were then involved in the smash on the R-72 between the city's airport and the turn-off to Buffalo Pass.
The road was closed for several hours late on Tuesday afternoon.
Marais says the name of the Warrant Officer, who was stationed at Kidds Beach, will be released at a later stage.
"We opened up an inquest. Eyewitnesses called it a freak accident. We have impounded all the vehicles our forensic team will put a report together and then we will decide if someone will be prosecuted" he said
