Eight perish in EC weekend crashes

At least eight people were killed in accidents across the Eastern Cape this past weekend.

Provincial traffic spokesperson, Charles Bramwell, said the latest accident occurred in the early hours of Sunday morning on the N9 between Graaff-Reinet and Middelburg.

"We had two Mercedes Benz Sprinter (vehicles) hitting each other head-on. In this accident three people were killed and 15 more were transported to the Midlands Hospital in Graaff-Reinet.  Two of those patients have been transferred to Livingstone Hospital in Port Elizabeth," Bramwell said.

"Also yesterday (Saturday) on the R410, between Cala and Lady Frere, a driver lost control over his vehicle which then overturned.  We had one person killed in this accident and one seriously injured."

Provincial traffic authorities also reported several pedestrian fatalities.

"The first one being on the R72, about 34 kilometres from East London towards Kidds Beach where a woman was hit by a car and killed.  On the R61 near Bizana a mini-bus hit a pedestrian who also died on the scene.  On the R409, between Tsomo and Ndabakazi, a pedestrian was also knocked down and killed," said Bramwell.

"Also on the R61, Bizana Wild Coast Road, there was a passenger who fell off the back of a bakkie and died on the scene," he added.

Meanwhile, the process of identifying the charred remains of the 16 people who were killed in a horror accident in the Free State on Friday, is still continuing.

Authorities said DNA tests will have to be done to determine the exact identities of the victims, many of them children from the Eastern Cape, who were travelling from Gauteng towards Sterkspruit when their mini-bus was involved in a collision with a bakkie.  Several people in the bakkie were also killed.
