Education and job creation top of the agenda for Eastern Cape premier Noxolo Kiviet

Eastern Cape premier Noxolo Kiviet says two of her government's strategic priorities are to strengthen education and to build a skills and human resource base in the province.

She says this will be in line with government's national development plan.

Delivering her state of the province address in the Bhisho legislature on Friday, premier Kiviet says the standard of education for most black learners is of poor quality.

"We acknowledge that over a number of years education in our province had some serious challenges, some of which negatively impacted the attainment of learning outcomes. We have responded to these challenges through a number of interventions including developing and implementing an internal plan with the full support of National government"

Meanwhile, Kiviet, says her administration will focus on large scale job creation through mega projects being planned for the Eastern Cape.

Speaking to Algoa FM News ahead of the state of the province address in the Bhisho legislature, the premier said these mega projects include the Mthombo refinery at Coega and the Msimvubu Dam project in the former Transkei.

"We are pulling all stops to ensure that all the mega projects of the province are realised before the end of the term. We are talking about tens of thousands of employees"
She says her administration is currently dealing with a culture change in Bhisho to improve the provincial public service.

"I would want to leave this office next year with a better public service which understands exactly the intentions of an ANC lead government, when we talk about a caring government and developmental state"
