The Unemployment Insurance Fund has welcomed the Eastern Cape High Court's decision to have the Eastern Cape Transport Tertiary Co-Operative Limited pay back millions of rands in misappropriated Covid-19 Ters funds.
Earlier this week the High Court in Makhanda granted a forfeiture order against the Co-Operative LTD to pay back R35 million in Ters funds that were misappropriated from the UIF.
The Fund says in a statement that it agrees with the Court's decision as it believes the benefits paid out to the ECTTC and affiliate co-operatives are indeed the proceeds of unlawful activities.
UIF Commissioner Teboho Maruping said the UIF had asserted that the applications were fraudulent because the intended recipients were not eligible for the benefits.
He said the fund would continue to pursue those entities and individuals who fleeced the fund.
He added that the law must take its course and ensure that wrongdoers are brought to book.
