The death toll on Eastern Cape roads has climbed to at least 13 for this weekend.
The Provincial Transport Department said five people were killed when a truck and car collided at the intersection of the N10 from Cookhouse and the R63 from Bedford on Saturday night.
Department spokesperson, Khuselwa Rantjie, said that all the deceased were in the car.
“The truck driver sustained minor injuries and has been transported to Bedford Hospital for medical treatment,” Rantjie said.
The names of the victims were not released.
Meanwhile, the Eastern Cape Department of Transport reported on Saturday that eight people were killed in three separate crashes in the province since the start of the weekend.
Four people were killed in an accident near Lusikisiki on Friday night, while a pedestrian was killed outside Mthatha when a vehicle left the road and hit the woman on the pavement.
Three people were killed in the early hours of Saturday morning when a bakkie crashed on the R411 near Coffee Bay.
Eastern Cape Transport, Safety and Liaison MEC, Weziwe Tikana, in an earlier statement, expressed shock and sadness following the weekend accidents and appealed to motorists to take extra caution on the roads.
