EC weekend death toll rises to at least 12


At least 12 people, including several pedestrians were killed in accidents in the Eastern Cape this weekend according to the Provincial Transport Department.

Three people were killed and 15 others were injured when two Mercedes Benz Sprinter vehicles collided head-on on the N9 between Graaff-Reinet and Middelburg in the early hours of Sunday morning.

“In this accident three people were killed and 15 more were transported to the Midlands Hospital in Graaff-Reinet. Two of those patients have been transferred to Livingstone Hospital in Port Elizabeth," said Provincial Traffic spokesperson, Charles Bramwell.

“Also yesterday (Saturday) on the R410, between Cala and Lady Frere, a driver lost control over his vehicle which then overturned. We had one person killed in this accident and one seriously injured," he said.

Bramwell said two people were also killed in a two-car collision on the R72 between near Bushmans River on Sunday while on Saturday two people were killed in an accident in Ngqamakwe at Mgobozweni administrative area .

Bramwell said there were also Provincial traffic authorities also reported several pedestrian fatalities.

"The first one being on the R72, about 34 kilometres from East London towards Kidds Beach where a woman was hit by a car and killed. On the R61 near Bizana a mini-bus hit a pedestrian who also died on the scene. On the R409, between Tsomo and Ndabakazi, a pedestrian was also knocked down and killed," said Bramwell.

"Also on the R61, Bizana Wild Coast Road, there was a passenger who fell off the back of a bakkie and died on the scene," he added.
