Eastern Cape Transport MEC, Weziwe Tikana-Gxotiwe says she has noticed with dismay the potentially deadly attacks on long-distance passenger buses.
She has called on law enforcement agencies to act against what she called "seemingly well-coordinated attacks".
The MEC says these attacks are indiscriminate as buses get pelted with stones, the smashing of windscreens, making it impossible for drivers to steer them, and endangering the innocent lives of all those on board.
Tikana-Gxotiwe says the attacks have been prominent on the R61 connecting the Eastern Cape with the Western Cape.
The latest incident was in Cradock last night, where buses from two different companies came under attack, with drivers' windscreens and passenger windows smashed.
"What is happening on our roads is completely unacceptable and could potentially lead to massive loss of lives. We have to act to prevent these from recurring. All those who are behind these barbaric acts, whoever they are, must face the might of the law," said Tikana-Gxotiwe.
