EC Transport Dept to take over Mthatha taxi ranks with KSD Municipality

The Eastern Cape Transport Department says it, together with the King Sabata Dalinyebo Municipality, will be taking over taxi ranks in Mthatha.

Transport MEC, Weziwe Tikana, said that since the violence between the Bata and Uncedo Associations broke out again in 2016, 127 case dockets have been opened.

She said there are more than 54 murder cases and 64 attempted murder cases under investigation that's been linked to the violence.

Agreements have been concluded with taxi associations but when the fragile peace accords were shattered by ongoing violence, Police Minister, Bheki Cele, closed the ranks.

MEC Tikana said on Tuesday that her Department will conclude a Memorandum of Understanding with the KSD Municipality to provide support to the Municipality while it builds its internal capacity to manage the Mthatha taxi ranks.

"To date three ranks have been opened in Mthatha, viz Chatham, Jubilee and Marikana taxi rank, which would be prioritised for cleaning since it was found to be in a bad state.  The Department has since appointed EPWP labourers for a major clean-up of all the ranks," she said.

Tikana said that government alone cannot end the taxi violence saying they remain open to stakeholder inputs was "we have adopted a role of a catalyst rather than as an agent facilitating the peace processes."

"The challenge of taxi violence cannot be solved by government alone, but a collaborative effort between the government, business, NGO's and ordinary community members is essential in this regard," she said.
