Eastern Cape Transport MEC, Weziwe Tikana-Gxotiwe says she believes a proper review of two audit reports on the functioning of scholar transport in the province ahead of the 2022 school year, is key to understanding challenges and improving the system.
The provincial transport department says these reports were conducted independently by two audit firms and the Auditor General.
It says both reports found instances of over and underpayments to operators due to insufficient internal controls.
Tikana-Gxotiwe and departmental senior managers, led by the Head of the Department, Mzi Mafani met at the weekend to look into scholar transport.
The MEC has directed Mafani to engage the provincial Treasury for an impartial review of the reports and how best to implement its recommendations
The Department says learners that have been approved will be transported come the start of the new school year on Wednesday.
